Ewing makes his decision
Bradie Ewing had plenty of collegiate options to mull over the past few months, but in the end, an opportunity to stay close to home and play football at Wisconsin trumped a scholarship offer and late push from the University of North Dakota.
"I've decided to walk-on at the University of Wisconsin," Ewing told BadgerBlitz.com Monday night. "I'm really excited. I can't wait to get down there to start."
A 6-foot-1, 210-pound running back from Richland Center, Wis., Ewing could have opted to play basketball at UW as a walk-on in 2008, but after rushing for 2,116 yards on 258 carries during his senior season, the all-state performer decided to play football at the next level.
"I've been in contact with Coach (Bret) Bielema a lot the last month and then Coach (Paul) Chryst came to my house a couple weeks ago to talk things over again," Ewing said. "I made my decision about a week after I sat down with Coach Chryst."
A chance to earn a scholarship down the road has not been ruled out, though Ewing did not go into the details about his discussions with the coaching staff.
"I don't want to get into the details of my conversation with the coaching staff, but all I can say is that I'm ready to get down there and start working my butt off," Ewing said.
The additional efforts of Bielema and his staff proved to be fruitful, as North Dakota made a strong push for Ewing services just weeks before National Signing Day on Feb. 6.
"Actually last week North Dakota increased my scholarship," Ewing said. "They were going to give me a 97 percent scholarship, which means I would have had everything paid for but my books, so that was really generous on their part."
It was learned Sunday night the coaching staff had secured a commitment from Sam Spitz, a 6-foot-1, 245-pound fullback from Whitney Young Academy in Chicago, Ill.
It is not known what position Ewing will play right away for the Badgers, but fullback would be a logical choice, meaning the staff is looking ahead to the 2009 season when both Chris Pressley and Bill Rentmester will have to be replaced.
