Appleton Xavier's Matt Ferris earns POW honors
Some could question the level of competition, and others might wonder why he was still in the game and throwing the ball.
Regardless, Xavier senior quarterback Matt Ferris turned in a game for the ages and continued his dream season during the Hawks' 64-14 drubbing of Ripon last Friday night at Rocky Bleier Field in Appleton.
The 6-foot-5 signal caller established a state single-game record with eight touchdown passes, giving him 28 TD tosses this season and well within reach of the state standard of 40, which Kenosha St. Joseph's Danny Freund set in 2003.
He finished with 420 yards while completing 24 of 36 attempts in three quarters of play, helping Xavier improve to 5-0. Those numbers made Ferris this week's WisconsinHigh.com player of the week.
Ferris connected with six players on scoring plays, the longest being his first of the night, a 46-yard hookup with Dan Reinhardt. Reinhardt and Levi O'Brien each caught two of Ferris' TD aerials in leading the Hawks to a 26-6 halftime advantage.
Ferris has thrown for nearly 1,700 yards and has completed 71.6 percent of his passes.
Meanwhile, Wausaukee's Beau DeLaet finished 12 of 14 for 132 yards passing and three TDs and rambled for 203 yards rushing and a fourth TD during a 36-28 win over Gillett.
Dakota Oskey rushed for 225 yards and scored five times in leading Seymour in its 57-13 thrashing of Fox Valley Lutheran.
Greendale's Josh Ringelberg passed for 289 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-0 whitewashing of New Berlin Eisenhower. Not to be outdone, fellow junior Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. threw five scoring passes and finished with 197 yards in Germantown's 49-21 win over Milwaukee Lutheran.
Superior's Nick Mehlum scored on a 4-yard run with under a minute remaining to cap a rally from a 20-6 third-quarter deficit to lead the Spartans to a 27-20 win over Rice Lake in a homecoming contest at Ole Haugsrud Field. Mehlum finished 17 of 27 for 227 yards and two TDs and added 46 yards rushing for 5-0 Superior.
Junior QB Ben Everhart led Eau Claire Memorial's 42-7 whipping of Chippewa Falls with a school record six touchdown passes, finishing 15 of 21 for 291 yards. Nearby, Menomonie sophomore Nate Stanley set a school mark with five TD tosses in its win over River Falls (38-0).
Plymouth standout Kollin Neils established a school record with 305 yards passing in a 41-6 win over New Holstein.
As for running backs, University School's Michael Tucker gained 278 yards on 30 carries and reached the end zone six times in a 62-30 win against Living Word Lutheran.
Bloomer's Colton Seibel rumbled for 251 yards on 30 attempts in a 51-7 trouncing of Cumberland, tying a school standard with six TDs.
The state's leading rusher, Branden Baumeister of North Crawford, gashed Ithaca for a season-high 266 yards and four touchdowns, giving him nearly 1,200 yards and 17 scores.
Sun Prairie's Noah Diaz continued his hot streak, blitzing previously unbeaten Madison La Follette for a school record 325 yards and three TDs in the Cardinals' big win.
Edgerton's Ricky Williams ambushed previously undefeated Jefferson with 252 yards and two scores two weeks after setting a Tide mark with 342 yards at Brodhead/Juda.
Matt Reader of Appleton East has become quite the receiving threat after being the team's quarterback the past two years. The senior has 32 receptions, 21 of them in the last two contests. He hauled in 13 catches for 216 yards and three scores in East's loss at D.C. Everest.
Levi O'Brien of Xavier "only" had six catches for 108 yards in Ferris' record-setting outing, but his two TDs extended his state-leading total to 13. He has at least two scoring receptions in every game.
